The Asset & Liability Management (ALM) team at Belfius Bank is responsible for managing the bank’s assets and liabilities to optimize profitability while controlling financial and liquidity risks. In a bank, assets typically include loans granted to customers, while liabilities mainly consist of customer deposits and other sources of funding. The balance between these assets and liabilities is crucial to ensure the bank’s stability and performance.

As an ALM analyst, you develop and use financial, mathematical, and ‘customer behavior’ models to ensure the optimal alignment between assets and liabilities. In addition to this core responsibility, you also support other ALM teams by designing and developing tools tailored to their needs—for example, by creating a loan pricing tool in Python. You have an impact on the bank’s interest rate and liquidity risk management models and on the commercial strategies related to the bank’s rates and liquidity.

Your job in a nutshell

You are responsible for the use and maintenance of certain existing ALM models and you contribute to the research and development of new models and tools to ensure ever more efficient ALM management and to keep up with the evolution of financial markets and customer behavior.

Your main task is to assist our teams both in the field of data science and AI by exploring new data and developing AI tools to better understand our clients, as well as in the maintenance and development of our mathematical and financial models.

The team is made up of civil engineers, financial experts, and mathematicians. Your role in this team is to bring new knowledge, ideas, and to help manage the day-to-day ALM of the bank.

A typical working day as an ALM Analyst might include programming in Python (implementing new features for existing tools in Python and developing new models), as well as exploring (SQL) the vast amount of data available at Belfius to analyze customer behavior. There will also be information-sharing and brainstorming meetings with the ALM, Risk, ICM (e.g., accounting), dealing room, data and AI teams, as well as the business teams. On some days, you will have learning (Sharing is Caring) and information (weekly meeting) sessions. You will also need to contribute to the preparation of presentations for certain meetings, particularly the ALCo (Asset-Liability Committee), and may even give a presentation at ALCo.
